Semester: 2023 Spring

Students: Visala Alagappan, Selam Kahsay, Madeleine Matsui, Scarlett Park

Six Virginian tribes received federal recognition under the Thomasina E. Jordan Indian Tribes of Virginia Federal Recognition Act. These tribes have a strong history of working well together and have a shared interest in being able to accept transferred Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) cases and assume authority over child custody matters. HNMCP students will support one of the tribe’s assessment of how an inter-tribal court for ICWA cases might be designed, as well as to understand how different stakeholders perceive what would be a just system for resolving these disputes
