Designing community dispute resolution processes to manage disputes related to land stewardship

Formed in November of 2015, Mi’gmawe’l Tplu’taqnn Inc., which means “Mi’gmaq People’s Law”, is a Mi’gmaq rights organization founded by Mi’gmaq First Nations in New Brunswick to assert and protect Aboriginal and Treaty Rights on behalf of its member communities.

As part of its mandate to advance treaty rights and Mi’gmaq self-determination, MTI works to implement Mi’gmaq laws in many contexts, including harvesting natural resources and protecting the land.  MTI has asked the DSD Clinic to help develop dispute resolution processes to manage community disputes arising under envisioned natural resource stewardship plans, based on Mi’gmaq concepts of justice.
