InnerCity Weightlifting

Semester: 2017 Fall

Students: Shayan Edalati & Anne Thoma

InnerCity Weightlifting (ICW) reduces youth violence by connecting proven-risk young people with new networks and opportunities, including meaningful career tracks in and beyond personal training. At ICW, we use the gym to replace segregation and isolation with economic mobility and social inclusion, disrupting the system that leads to urban street violence. ICW contacted HNMCP to help design and codify an internal conflict resolution process that is based in restorative justice principles. This process would be utilized for any conflicts that arise within the organization, with a particular focus on supporting ICW’s students.

Activities & Deliverables Envisioned

  • Interviews and/or focus groups with ICW leadership, staff, and students;
  • Research into progressive organizations working with similar target populations who have used restorative practices;
  • Design for a conflict resolution process based in restorative justice principles that ICW can implement at its current facilities and resources that can be used for the launch of new sites as the organization grows.
