Announcing the 2018 HNMCP Art Contest – A Call for Poetry

2017 Art Contest Winner: “Imagine” by Michael Bogdanow

The Harvard Negotiation and Mediation Clinical Program (HNMCP) builds community around conflict resolution skills and practice.

In part our work explores ways in which formal and informal dialogue can be used encourage listening, appreciation, and understanding across seemingly insurmountable divides. While facilitated dialogue may not transform division or polarization on its own, we see great value in bringing people face to face, lifting up their similarities as well as their differences, and encouraging them to share what matters most to them.

For this year’s annual art contest HNMCP is inviting original works of poetry that engage these themes of conflict and dialogue. We believe that expressive arts have a unique ability to deepen practitioners’ appreciation for and understanding of the complex world of conflict resolution and management. Moreover, the practice of creative expression is itself a form of peacebuilding. It involves activating the imagination, a degree of perspective-taking, and human agency in creating and working towards the world we want, not only the world that is. As a starting point, our 2018 theme: “us, them, and everything in between”.

Winning entries will be featured on the HNMCP blog and will be displayed in our suite at Harvard Law School for a minimum of one year, beginning in Spring 2018.
