Emerging Technology and Dispute Resolution: What Does the Future Hold?

TUESDAY, APRIL 10, 2018 | 12:00-1:15 PM (LUNCH PROVIDED)
HARVARD LAW SCHOOL, POUND HALL 100 CAHILL CLASSROOM

The rapid development of emerging technologies is largely outpacing traditional laws and regulations intended to provide order in our lives and commerce. In such circumstances, will national courts or alternative dispute resolution (e.g. arbitration, mediation) continue to provide a reliable and efficient method for dispute resolution? Will new approaches and forums for dispute resolution develop in parallel? How can technology, which is advancing at exponential rates of change, be governed by institutions that evolve, at best, at linear rates of change?

Please join us for a lunchtime panel discussion with two leading thinkers in the technology and dispute resolution spaces focusing on what the future may hold for emerging technologies and dispute resolution.

Joel Cutcher-Gershenfeld, Professor, Heller School for Social Policy and Management, Brandeis University; editor of Negotiation Journal; and co-author of Designing Reality: How to Survive and Thrive in the Third Digital Revolution (Basic Books, 2017)

Ethan Katsh, Professor and Director, National Center for Information Technology and Dispute Resolution, University of Massachusetts; co-author of Digital Justice: Technology and the Internet of Disputes (OUP, 2017); winner of the 2017 D’Alemberte-Raven award from the ABA for outstanding contributions to Online Dispute Resolution (ODR)

Moderator: David Earnest, SVAMC-YP, Steering Committee Co-Chair | Shearman & Sterling LLP
